Pinecone Ash Mug

A one-of-a-kind ceramic mug shaped by the textures and materials of the forest.

The band around the rim is created by pressing individual segments of a real pinecone into the clay—forming a repeating pattern that wraps fully around the piece. This detail adds a subtle, tactile texture reminiscent of natural growth and structure.

The glaze is built in layers. A deep brown base—chosen for the interior has its similarity to pinecone tones—grounds the form, while a rich green glaze moves across the exterior surface, shifting in depth and saturation.

To further develop the surface, handmade pinecone ash was added during glazing. The ash was created from pinecones collected in the mountains, dried for weeks, and burned down before being applied to the exterior. During firing, this ash melts and reacts unpredictably—creating natural variation, raised texture, and occasional blue-toned pooling across the surface.

Some small ash inclusions remain visible and tactile, a direct record of the material’s transformation in the kiln.

Each mug is entirely unique—yet the set is cohesive.
